What Are Panic Attacks?

A panic attack can happen anywhere, at any time. You may feel terrified and overwhelmed, even though you’re not in any danger.

If this kind of random event has happened to you at least twice, and you constantly worry and change your routine to keep from having one, you might have panic disorder -- a type of anxiety disorder.

One in 10 adults in the U.S. have panic attacks each year. About a third of people have one in their lifetime and it’s more common in women than in men.

That being said, anxiety and panic attacks are on the rise and many people don't know how to stop them or why they are even happening.

A panic attack is a sudden strong feeling of fear. You’ll have four or more of these signs:

  • Pounding or fast heartbeat

  • Sweating

  • Trembling or shaking

  • Shortness of breath or a feeling of being smothered

  • A choking feeling

  • Chest pain

  • Nausea or stomach pains

  • Feeling dizzy or faint

  • Chills or hot flashes

  • Numbness or tingling in the body

  • Feeling unreal or detached

  • A fear of losing control or going crazy

  • A fear of dying

Did you know?

Due to modern day stresses, most people are stuck in the same fight or flight response that saved our lives when we needed to outrun saber-toothed tigers. However, these days this unconscious physiological reaction is unnecessary and people don't know how to stop it. Shirley specializes in this.

What About Anxiety Disorders?

Often, anxiety disorders involve repeated episodes of sudden feelings of intense anxiety and fear or terror that reach a peak within minutes (panic attacks).

These feelings of anxiety and panic interfere with normal daily activities, are difficult to control, are out of proportion to the actual danger and can last a long time. You may avoid places or situations to prevent these feelings. Many people go to great lengths to avoid or lessen anxiety and anxiety-related issues. Symptoms may start during childhood or the teen years and continue into adulthood.

Examples of anxiety disorders include generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder (social phobia), specific phobias and separation anxiety disorder. You can have more than one anxiety disorder. Sometimes anxiety results from a medical condition that needs treatment.

Shirley is highly qualified and experienced at helping people with anxiety, panic attacks and anxiety disorders. Read below to learn how.
